Many people (including me) are fascinated by CTFs. But what makes these games so interesting? Here are my thoughts.
1. CTFs are all about thinking creatively.
Regular technology aims to be useful and predictable. On the other hand, CTFs showcase the unintended and exciting possibilities of modern computers. At times, it can feel almost dangerous. For both CTF creators and players, using tech in new ways is what keeps these events exciting.
2. CTFs are a new trend.
Although puzzles have been around for thousands of years, it's the arrival of the internet that allows hundreds of people to solve them at the same time. This competitive environment inspires players to try new approaches and be the first to solve each challenge.
3. CTFs are a social experience.
Each CTF is full of interesting people with different backgrounds. Joining the CTF community can be just as satisfying as solving the challenges themselves. Even after CTFs are over, players enjoy discussing solutions with one another over the internet.
Many CTFs are also becoming team events, where people with different skills work together to solve complex tasks.
4. CTFs aren't just about cybersecurity.
Anything can be a CTF challenge! As long as you like solving puzzles, using technology, and making new friends, you can have lots of fun making and playing CTFs.
